Elopement at Abadía Retuerta

Some weddings are not measured by the number of guests but by how deeply they are lived. Alex and Megan flew in from the United States to get married in Spain, just the two of them, at Abadía Retuerta, a twelfth-century abbey in the heart of the Ribera del Duero wine region. No guests, no formalities: a first look at sunrise, private vows among the vines and the quiet of the monastery.

About a year before, they wrote to us from the US. They had found our work through the intimate weddings and elopements on our website, like this elopement at Bodegas Arzuaga, and they knew what they wanted: a place with soul, beautiful and timeless. When they asked us for a venue, one name came to mind straight away. Endless vineyards, stone cloisters and an almost sacred silence: for an elopement, where every moment counts, Abadía Retuerta gives you space, calm and extraordinary light. So we built the whole day around sunrise.

At 6:30 in the morning we were already there, watching the first light rise over the vineyards. The day began with getting-ready photos inside the monastery, where stone walls and soft window light do most of the work. Then came one of the most emotional moments: the first look in the gardens, in complete privacy, just as the first rays of sun came through the trees and touched the stone paths.

After the first look they read their vows to each other. No stage, no audience, no distractions: just words from the heart. Then the small rituals that make an elopement: a long embrace, a champagne toast on a wooden bench with the abbey behind them, and a dance that nobody had planned. There was no rush. Only presence.

As the sun climbed, we moved into the vineyards around the abbey for the main part of the session. Landscape, architecture and early light let us tell the whole story: close portraits, candid moments and wide scenes that show the scale of the place. We also flew the drone to show it from above, two people alone in a sea of vines.

To close, we went back inside the monastery. The cloister, the staircases and the refectory brought a completely different mood: enclosed, architectural and timeless, a counterpoint to the open vineyards of the morning.

Not every day does a couple cross an ocean to get married and trust a photographer from Valladolid with one of the most important days of their lives. That trust is what makes elopements so special.
